New York coverage

Car Shipping to and from New York

We move vehicles into and out of New York City, Long Island and upstate. New York will not accept out-of-state auto insurance of any kind, and that single rule causes more registration problems for new arrivals than everything else combined.

What New York car shipping costs

New York pricing reflects access as much as distance. Dense urban streets, low bridges and permit restrictions mean a full-size carrier often cannot reach a Manhattan or Brooklyn address, and a nearby meeting point is arranged instead. Our published long-haul reference rate is about $0.58 per mile on typical long-distance routes.

Common New York corridors Distances are approximate driving miles. Rates shown are derived from our published long-haul reference rate and are estimates, not quotes.
Route Approx. distance Open transport estimate Notes
California → New York ~2,800 mi from ~$1,625 Longest mainland corridor. Best per-mile economics of any route we run.
Florida → New York ~1,200 mi from ~$696 Snowbird lane. Northbound demand spikes in spring.
Texas → New York ~1,600 mi from ~$928 Steady year-round corridor.
Within New York under 500 mi short-haul rate NYC to Buffalo or Albany to Long Island.
Enclosed transport any premium Common for vehicles moving to and from Manhattan garages.

Estimates above multiply approximate corridor distance by our published long-haul reference rate. They are a planning aid, not an offer. Actual pricing depends on pickup and delivery ZIP codes, vehicle dimensions, operating condition, transport type and current carrier availability on the lane.

New York rules that affect your shipment

Registration requirements differ sharply by state. Check these before your vehicle ships, not after it arrives.

30 days to register

A new resident must get a New York registration within 30 days of establishing residence, per the New York DMV.

New York insurance only

The DMV does not accept out-of-state vehicle insurance coverage of any kind. If your vehicle is registered in New York it must carry New York State liability coverage. Arrange this before you register, not after.

Inspection grace period

If your vehicle carried a valid inspection sticker from another state, that inspection stays valid until it expires or for one year after the New York registration date, whichever comes first. You also receive a 10-day inspection extension at registration.

New York car shipping FAQ

How long does it take to ship a car to New York?
Transit depends on the corridor. A California origin covers roughly 2,800 miles, while Florida runs about 1,200. Urban delivery may add a day because carriers schedule city access around traffic and street restrictions.
Can a car carrier deliver to my address in Manhattan or Brooklyn?
Often not directly. Full-size carriers are restricted by street width, low bridges and parking rules across much of New York City. A nearby accessible meeting point is arranged instead, usually within a short distance.
Will New York accept my current auto insurance?
No. The New York DMV does not accept out-of-state vehicle insurance coverage of any kind. A vehicle registered in New York must carry New York State liability coverage, so arrange it before you register.
Do I need a New York inspection right away?
Not immediately if your vehicle carried a valid out-of-state inspection sticker. That inspection remains valid until it expires or one year after your New York registration date, whichever comes first.
How long do I have to register after moving to New York?
Thirty days from establishing residence. Because New York insurance is a prerequisite and out-of-state coverage is not accepted, start the insurance step well before the deadline.
Do I have to be there for pickup and delivery?
Someone over 18 must be present at both ends to release the vehicle, sign the Bill of Lading and inspect condition. A friend, relative or colleague can act on your behalf if you name them in advance.
