Car Shipping to and from Texas

We move vehicles across the Texas Triangle and out to El Paso and the Valley. Texas gives you thirty days to register, but whether you need an emissions test depends entirely on which county you land in — and only seventeen of them require it.

What Texas car shipping costs

Texas sits at the center of several high-volume lanes, which generally means good carrier availability in both directions. Our published long-haul reference rate is about $0.58 per mile on typical long-distance routes, and per-mile pricing falls as total distance rises.

Common Texas corridors Distances are approximate driving miles. Rates shown are derived from our published long-haul reference rate and are estimates, not quotes.
Route Approx. distance Open transport estimate Notes
California → Texas ~1,400 mi from ~$812 High-volume lane in both directions. Frequent carrier availability.
Florida → Texas ~1,100 mi from ~$638 Gulf corridor. Steady year-round demand.
New York → Texas ~1,600 mi from ~$928 Northeast corridor into the Triangle.
Within Texas under 500 mi short-haul rate Houston to Dallas or Austin to El Paso.
Enclosed transport any premium Common for trucks and collector vehicles.

Estimates above multiply approximate corridor distance by our published long-haul reference rate. They are a planning aid, not an offer. Actual pricing depends on pickup and delivery ZIP codes, vehicle dimensions, operating condition, transport type and current carrier availability on the lane.

Texas rules that affect your shipment

Registration requirements differ sharply by state. Check these before your vehicle ships, not after it arrives.

30 days to register

You have 30 days from the time you move to Texas to register your vehicle, per TxDMV. Penalty fees apply after that.

Emissions only in 17 counties

Emissions testing is required only in Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis and Williamson. Everywhere else, a standard DPS safety inspection is enough.

Vehicle not yet in Texas

If the vehicle is being registered in Texas while physically located elsewhere, form VTR-272 (Application for Registration Purposes Only) exempts it from the safety inspection requirement until it arrives.

Texas car shipping FAQ

How long does it take to ship a car to Texas?
Transit depends on the corridor. California to Texas covers roughly 1,400 miles and the Northeast runs about 1,600. Texas sits on several high-volume lanes, so carrier availability is usually good in both directions.
Do I need an emissions test in Texas?
Only in seventeen counties, including Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Travis, Collin and El Paso. Outside those, a standard Department of Public Safety inspection is sufficient for registration.
How long do I have to register a car in Texas?
Thirty days from the day you move to the state. Penalty fees apply after that window closes, so book your inspection and county visit early rather than at the deadline.
Can I register a car in Texas before it arrives?
Yes. Form VTR-272, Application for Registration Purposes Only, covers a vehicle being registered in Texas while it is still located out of state, and exempts it from safety inspection until it is in Texas.
Do I have to be there for pickup and delivery?
Someone over 18 must be present at both ends to release the vehicle, sign the Bill of Lading and inspect condition. A friend, relative or colleague can act on your behalf if you name them in advance.
Do you ship oversized trucks in Texas?
Lifted trucks, duallies and long-bed vehicles need carriers with the right deck configuration. Tell us the modifications when you request the quote, because they affect which carriers can accept the load.
